Last Friday 16 October, 350.org gathered supporters together to take some publicity shots to promote their Day of Climate Action on 24 October.
305.0rg is ‘an international campaign dedicated to creating an equitable global climate treaty that lowers carbon dioxide below 350 parts per million. 350 is the number that leading scientists say is the safe upper limit for carbon dioxide measured in parts per million (ppm) in our atmosphere. 350 ppm is the number humanity needs to get back below as soon as possible to avoid runaway climate change. We are now very close to 390 ppm’ (www.350.org/au)
I got involved in Friday’s event as a member of GetUp and decided to give up a couple of hours of my afternoon for this worthy cause. Grassroots campaigns such as GetUp have had some great successes. It can be argued that GetUp helped unseat the former Prime Minister, John Howard, with their letter drop campaign before the 2007 Federal Election. The organisation has also been credited with helping to secure the release of David Hicks from Guantanamo Bay prison.
Back to 350.0rg, there are 160 official events planned around Australia for the Day of Climate Action on 24 October. Check out the 350.0rg website for more details. GetUp is also involved in climate action as well as human rights and other issues.
Together we can do something to help world leaders take the appropriate action to arrest climate change.
